Key Features

  • 10.2-MP DX-format CCD image sensor: A newly developed 10.2 effective megapixel DX-format CCD image sensor captures images with edge-to-edge sharpness and incredible color at 3,872 x 2,592 pixels, yielding extraordinarily high-resolution images perfect for enlargements or creative cropping.
  • Industry-leading image processing for exceptional color performance: Incorporates Nikon's industry-leading advanced image processing engine of the D2x, allowing for color-independent pre-conditioning prior to A/D conversion working in concert with advanced digital image processing algorithms to achieve fine color gradations with exceptionally smooth, consistent transitions.
  • Large viewfinder with 0.94x magnification: The new eye-level optical viewfinder developed for the D200 features large magnification (0.94x) that helps ensure a clear view for precise composition with a built-in diopter adjustment that allows fine-tuning tailored to your eyesight.
  • Durable, magnesium alloy (Mg) body: Nikon's advanced technologies and mechanisms are housed within a rugged, lightweight magnesium alloy chassis, ready for the most rigorous of assignments. Additional dust and moisture sealing add to the D200's strength.
  • 5 fps high-speed continuous shooting: Capture fast action and fleeting expressions with the ability to capture high-resolution images at a rapid 5 frames per second in continuous bursts of up to 22 NEF (RAW) or 37 JPEG (fine - large) shots.**
  • Fast SLR response where it counts: Instant power-up in just 0.15 seconds, a shutter release time lag of a mere 50 milliseconds and a shortened viewfinder blackout time of just 105 milliseconds makes the D200 ready to respond to any photographic situation.
  • 11-area multi-CAM AF system with 7 area wide AF sensor module: The new multi-CAM 1000 AF sensor module offers an 11-area AF that ensures consistently fast and precise focus lock under varying shooting conditions. The 7-wide area AF system offers broad coverage suited for moving subjects enabling greater compositional freedom.
  • Large 2.5-inch LCD monitor with wide-angle viewing to 170 degrees: A high resolution LCD monitor provides ultra-wide, 170-degree viewing in all directions. Assisting with accurate sharpness assessment, images can be previewed at up to 400% magnification.
  • EN-EL3e rechargeable battery with fuel gauge function: The high-energy EN-EL3e rechargeable lithium-ion battery lets you capture up to 1,800 shots per charge featuring an accurate real-time fuel gauge system that displays the percentage of remaining charge, number of shots since last charge and overall status of battery service life.
  • Wireless Transmitter WT-3a: The optional wireless transmitter WT-3a provides wireless functionality with IEEE 802.11b/g technology enabling cable-free image transfer to a compatible computer with the added safety and versatility of wide-ranging network and security protocols.

Award Winner

Popular Photography & Imaging, Winter 2007

Popular Photography & Imaging has recognized the Nikon D200 as one of the outstanding products of photography in 2006. Editor Michael McNamara summed up the D200’s award selection by stating that the camera is “fast, reliable and capable of handling a wide variety of conditions.” McNamara points out that the excellent image quality, tough camera body, long battery life and superb optical viewfinder make the D200 a true award-winning camera.

Award Winner

American Photo Editor’s Choice 2006 Award

“If we had to pick a single American Photo camera of the year, the Nikon D200 would take that honor,” stated American Photo in their July/August 2006 issue. Distinguished as an American Photo “Editor’s Choice 2006,” editors were impressed with the small size, yet feature-full package of the camera. Refined, advanced, best of class, sturdy and extremely responsive were some of the ecstatic words editors used to describe the camera after they enjoyed the superb image quality and menu system of the D200.

Award Winner

Camera Grand Prix 2006 Award

Nikon Corporation is pleased to announce that the D200 digital SLR camera has been selected by Japan’s Camera Press Club to receive the Camera Grand Prix 2006 award. The Camera Grand Prix is the Japanese photo industry’s most prestigious award for a camera. The committee members issued the following statement in support of bestowing the Camera Grand Prix 2006 honor on the D200. “The Nikon D200 contributes to the widespread dissemination of photographic culture as a digital SLR offering superior operability at an affordable price for both entry-level digital SLR camera users as well as professional and highend amateur photographers.”

Review

May/June 2006, Nikon D200

by Jonathan Barkey

In its May/June 2006 issue, American Photo calls the D200 “the best mid-priced DSLR you can buy.” Jonathan Barkey states that the D200 is a “home run” and “a pleasure to have and to hold” in his glowing review of the camera. Noting that the D200 is extremely responsive with a “big for its class” optical viewfinder and a “rock-solid construction,” Barkey also notes his fulfillment with the camera’s variety of user-friendly attributes. He praises the D200 on its ability to pack the core features of high-priced cameras into a “smaller, lighter package” advising photographers to consider this mid-priced digital SLR when purchasing a top-of-the-line camera.

Review

May 2006, Nikon D200

by George Schaub

According to Shutterbug Editorial Director, George Schaub, digital SLR cameras have “opened up a new world of low-light and hand-held shooting” and the built-in noise reduction filter in Nikon’s D200, makes photography an “even more attractive pastime.” Schaub also states that the D200 delivers imaging power for enlargements, crops to 8x10 prints and has more imaging options than one could imagine—not much this camera cannot handle.

Review

April 2006, Nikon D200

by Michael McNamara

Popular Photography & Imaging Executive Technology Editor, Michael McNamara, clarified some of his unanswered questions during an in-depth review of the D200 in the magazine’s April issue. Stating that images from the D200 “rival” those from the D2X, McNamara gave the D200 a rave review. He also notes that the D200 has superb color accuracy, and the images it produces have great saturation and a wide dynamic range.
